How many Plants do I need?
You’ll need to plant your whips between 30cm (12in) and 60cm (24in) apart for a hedge that 90cm (3ft) thick. For thicker, denser hedge, plant two staggered rows 45cm (18in) apart.
Prepare the ground
Dig a trench that 60-90cm (24-36in) wide to a single spades depth. Ensure that it’s clear of weeds and fork in plenty of compost or well rotted manure.
Planting
Tease out the roots of your whips and trim any damaged growth. Plant them in the trench, with the top of the roots at the same level as the surrounding soil. Firm the young plants in well, and water generously.
Aftercare
For the first two years, water your growing hedge during dry spells and keep it free of weeds, on both sides, to a distance of 45cm (18in). Top-dress once a year with a good quality, general purpose fertiliser.
